About the project
The Pemberton and District Community Centre (PDCC) is excited to announce that the construction of the Pemberton Community Basketball Court has begun.

The basketball court will be located on Signal Hill Elementary School property on Pemberton Portage Road, Pemberton. While the court will be primarily used for basketball, it will also function as multi-purpose facility with capabilities for pickleball, soccer and ball hockey.

This new community amenity will be open to the public from dawn to dusk (outside school hours) and will be available for group bookings.

The basketball court is estimated to be functionally complete for Fall 2022.

Background

The construction of a community basketball court has been a desire of the Pemberton community and a priority of the Pemberton Valley Utilities and Services (PVUS) committee for a number of years.

At the PVUS committee meeting held on Thursday, May 12, 2022, staff provided an update on the proposed location for the outdoor basketball court. At that time, staff advised that the preferred location for the court was on Signal Hill Elementary School (SHE). School district staff were delighted at the prospect of the basketball court being on school grounds and supported it being located at the front of the school along Portage Road.

Upon consultation with BC Hydro, it was determined that the best location for the basketball court was outside the BC Hydro Right of Way (ROW) and therefore the court will be constructed between the SHE parking lot and Portage Road (as pictured).

The PVUS committee supported the relocation of the court to SHE school grounds and work began immediately to move the project forward. Murphy Construction approached the Village and volunteered their project management services in-kind to build the court with an aim to have it finished by September 2022. This aligns with the School District's request to ensure construction is undertaken over the summer and completed prior to the start of the new school year.

The addition of the basketball court will be an important feature for the recreation hub along Portage Road to satisfy recreational pursuits of multiple groups within the community.

This project was made possible by:

  • Pemberton Valley Utilities and Services Committee (PVUS)
  • Graham and his team at Murphy Construction
  • Patrick at Alpine Paving
  • Ian at SD#48
